Advancing New Opportunities for Garnet Through Global Research
How GMA's growing network of research partnerships is helping unlock new applications and opportunities for garnet

Innovation has long been central to GMA's approach to creating value for customers and identifying new opportunities for garnet. Today, that commitment is being strengthened through a growing network of research partnerships with leading universities and institutes across Australia, Europe and the Middle East.
Working alongside academic researchers, industry specialists and selected industry partners, GMA is exploring new applications for garnet, advancing technical knowledge and investigating opportunities that have the potential to reshape how the mineral is used across a range of industries. These collaborations support three strategic focus areas for the business: new applications, innovation and disruption.
Through this global research network, GMA is identifying where garnet can replace existing materials, enhance the performance of partner products or contribute to solutions that improve durability, efficiency and long-term value. The work spans both established and emerging applications, helping the company uncover opportunities beyond its traditional markets.
According to Alex Bozward, GMA's New Market & Innovation Manager, collaboration between industry and academia enables the company to combine practical experience with leading-edge research.
"Innovation often happens at the intersection of industry experience and academic research. By collaborating with leading institutions across multiple regions, we're able to explore emerging ideas, test new concepts and better understand how garnet can create value in applications beyond those traditionally associated with our industry."
GMA's global research network currently includes collaborations with:
- Edith Cowan University, Australia
- Curtin University, Australia
- RMIT University, Australia
- Institut für Korrosionsschutz Dresden GmbH, Germany
- A leading university in Saudi Arabia

Together, these partnerships bring expertise across areas such as materials science, corrosion protection, mineral processing and emerging industrial technologies. They also provide GMA with valuable opportunities to deepen technical knowledge while exploring future avenues for innovation and growth.
Some projects focus on enhancing existing applications and processes, while others investigate how garnet's unique properties can contribute to emerging industries and technologies. Current research includes advanced industrial applications as well as opportunities to improve the durability and sustainability of construction materials.
For Flynn Cowan, GMA's General Manager International Sales & Marketing, these partnerships reflect the company's long-term commitment to innovation and customer-focused growth.
"The challenges facing industry continue to evolve, and innovation is essential to ensuring we remain relevant and competitive. Our collaboration with universities and research institutions strengthens our ability to develop new knowledge, explore emerging opportunities and support sustainable growth."
The international nature of the research network also enables GMA to draw on diverse perspectives and specialist expertise from different regions, helping the company look beyond conventional applications and identify new ways garnet can address future industry challenges.
GMA CEO Stephan Kirsch believes these partnerships play an important role in positioning the business for long-term success.
"Research partnerships play an important role in helping us expand our understanding of garnet and explore opportunities that align with our long-term strategy. By combining our industry expertise with leading research capabilities around the world, we're building knowledge that can support future growth, strengthen our business and continue delivering value to customers."

As GMA continues to explore new applications for garnet, its global research network will remain a key part of the company's innovation strategy. By connecting industry expertise with specialist research capabilities, GMA is building the knowledge needed to support customer-led innovation, identify opportunities in emerging markets and create long-term value beyond traditional applications
