Batam, Indonesia, 9 September 2025 - Jebsen & Jessen Group, a diversified industrial conglomerate, has collaborated with Seven Clean Seas, an ocean impact organisation, to combat the global plastic crisis and protect oceans from plastic pollution. The organisations embarked on a week-long volunteer trip, under Jebsen & Jessen Group’s community engagement programme, Meet a Need, in Batam, Indonesia, from 24 to 30 August 2025. This project represents Seven Clean Seas’ largest corporate volunteer initiative in Indonesia to date, which showcases a shared vision for a healthier planet and a future free from ocean plastic waste.
The Meet a Need programme is part of Jebsen & Jessen Group’s long-standing corporate social responsibility initiative, which combines corporate volunteering with funding for projects that meet social or environmental needs in the region. The programme aims to create hands-on opportunities for Jebsen & Jessen Group’s staff to support not-for-profit projects in South East Asia and foster meaningful impact for both communities and the environment.
This project is part of Jebsen & Jessen Group’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness on the impact of plastic waste and reduce plastic usage and pollution. Earlier in the year, an educational webinar, held in partnership with Seven Clean Seas, brought together 500 employees across different countries in a collective effort to educate them on the impact of plastic waste and encourage sustainable habits. This inspired 340 employees to submit written pledges, committing to using reusable drinking containers.
“At Jebsen & Jessen Group, our commitment to sustainability is part of everything we do. We’re proud to have partnered with Seven Clean Seas and be a part of the work that they’re doing for our oceans and planet. This partnership allows us to engage in meaningful activities aimed at tackling ocean plastic pollution head-on and create measurable and sustainable impact for both the local communities and the environment,” said Heinrich Jessen, Chairman of Jebsen and Jessen Group.
Throughout the week, Jebsen & Jessen Group employees, alongside the Seven Clean Seas team, participated in a series of activities tackling plastic pollution at the source and promoting circular solutions, including:
- Re-roofing a local house with recycled tiles: Worked with the Tanjung Uma community to replace the hazardous asbestos roof tiles on one community house with safe, durable tiles made from 100% recycled ocean plastic
- River barrier implementation: A river barrier, designed to intercept plastic waste before it flows into the ocean, was constructed and installed in the Bengkong River, one of Batam’s most polluted rivers, preventing thousands of kilograms of plastic from entering marine ecosystems each year
- Community cleanup and recycling activities: Engaged in a community cleanup at one of Batam’s most polluted coastal communities and participated in sorting and recycling activities at the Materials Recovery Facility to learn about the recycling process to turn plastic waste into valuable resources
- Community education on plastic waste: Educated local communities on plastic pollution and its impact to raise awareness on critical environmental issues and promote community empowerment and action

Jebsen & Jessen Group will fund environmental operations to recover 32,500 kilograms of plastic from communities in Batam over the next 12 months. The recovery of ocean plastic will also contribute towards improving the livelihoods of 80 people through job creation and employment in polluted coastal communities, education programmes, and improved living conditions and human health.
Beyond the 5-day volunteering effort, this project aims to create lasting change by enhancing plastic pollution interception and collection and raising awareness through community education. These activities will make a significant impact on the local community in Batam and contribute towards the Indonesian government's efforts to reduce plastic waste and achieve a near-zero plastic waste pollution by 2040.

“Collaborations of this scale are critical if we are to make real progress against the ocean plastic crisis,” said Tom Peacock-Nazil, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Seven Clean Seas. “By combining Jebsen & Jessen Group’s commitment and resources with our expertise on the ground, we can prevent more plastic from entering our oceans, repurpose it into valuable materials, and uplift local communities at the same time. This partnership is a great example of how we can all work together to make a difference towards achieving our vision of plastic-free oceans.”
“On behalf of the Tanjung Uma community and the local government office, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Seven Clean Seas and the Jebsen & Jessen team for their valuable contribution through the cleanup activities and the installation of roof plates in our village. Their support means a lot to our community,” said Ahmadi Awang, District Secretary at Tanjung Uma.
This latest initiative and Jebsen & Jessen Group’s Meet a Need programme are an extension of Jebsen & Jessen Group’s long-standing commitment to sustainability to ensure a thriving world for future generations. It builds on initiatives implemented over the years, from the installation of solar panels in its facilities to achieving carbon neutrality in 2011.
