Jebsen & Jessen Group Supports Sumatran Elephant Conservation in Indonesia
Through its Meet a Need programme, Jebsen & Jessen Group collaborated with Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Indonesia to support habitat restoration and human-elephant coexistence efforts in Way Kambas National Park
SINGAPORE, 17 July 2026 – Jebsen & Jessen Group has partnered with Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Indonesia through its signature volunteering programme, Meet a Need, to support habitat restoration and human-elephant conflict mitigation efforts in Way Kambas National Park, one of the last remaining strongholds of the critically endangered Sumatran elephant.
The initiative brought together 19 Jebsen & Jessen colleagues from nine countries across Asia-Pacific, Mongolia and Brazil to work alongside WCS conservation practitioners, Way Kambas National Park authorities and local communities in a series of activities aimed at strengthening biodiversity conservation and ecosystem resilience.
Located in southern Sumatra, Way Kambas National Park is recognised as one of Indonesia's most important conservation landscapes and is home to a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including the Sumatran elephant, Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhinoceros, tapir and sun bear. As pressures on wildlife habitats continue to increase, collaborative conservation efforts are essential to safeguarding the future of these species and the ecosystems they depend on.
As part of the week-long programme, volunteers worked alongside conservation experts and community members on projects that support long-term ecosystem restoration and human-elephant coexistence. Their contributions included the construction of a human-elephant conflict monitoring watch post and an elephant observation tower to strengthen wildlife monitoring and early-warning capabilities in areas where elephant movement is regularly recorded.
The team also supported the development of local nursery infrastructure that will help increase the production of native tree species for future restoration activities. These efforts contribute to ongoing initiatives to rehabilitate degraded land within and around the national park while improving ecological connectivity for wildlife.
In conjunction with World Environment Day, Jebsen & Jessen volunteers joined WCS Indonesia, park authorities and local stakeholders in a tree-planting exercise within a designated rehabilitation zone of the park. Together, the group planted native tree species as part of a broader restoration initiative targeting approximately three hectares of degraded land and supporting the recovery of critical wildlife habitat.
The programme reflects Jebsen & Jessen's commitment to creating positive environmental impact through partnerships that address real-world sustainability challenges. By working alongside conservation organisations, government agencies and local communities, employees gained first-hand insight into the complexities of biodiversity conservation and the importance of collective action in protecting vulnerable ecosystems.
The collaboration also demonstrates how partnerships across the public, private and non-profit sectors can contribute to meaningful and lasting conservation outcomes. Combining scientific expertise, local knowledge and corporate volunteerism creates a stronger foundation for restoring ecosystems and supporting coexistence between people and wildlife.
As biodiversity loss and habitat fragmentation continue to threaten wildlife populations globally, initiatives such as Meet a Need show how businesses can play an active role in supporting conservation efforts while fostering greater environmental awareness among employees and stakeholders.
