Not Forgetting the Welfare of Our Local Mersing Fishermen

Almost 300 fishermen in Mersing benefited from this meaningful community service initiative including those living on Pulau Aur, Pulau Pemanggil, Pulau Tinggi and Pulau Sibu.

“Thank you J & J” and “See you again soon”. These were words of gratitude expressed loudly by more than 100 fishermen at the Teluk Buih jetty in Mersing after the Chairman of Singapore-based international diversified industrial conglomerate Jebsen & Jessen Group (Jebsen & Jessen) Heinrich Jessen handed fish houses, fish traps and fishing nets to them in the presence of the Mersing District Officer Tuan Hj Jamil Hasni Bin Abdullah, Social Hero Foundation (SHF) Trustee Datuk Seri Teo Shiok Fu, SHF Director of Program Farrah Baptist and Darren How, Jebsen & Jessen Head of Corporate Communications & Employee Experience on 27 August 2025.

Almost 300 fishermen in Mersing benefited from this meaningful community service initiative including those living on Pulau Aur, Pulau Pemanggil, Pulau Tinggi and Pulau Sibu.

In December 2024, Jebsen & Jessen collaborated with SHF on a community service initiative to help the fishermen community in Mersing, Johor. 20 Jebsen & Jessen staff volunteers from Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia led by Darren How spent a week with the SHF Team to carry out the various meaningful and impactful projects in Teluk Buih and Endau to help the local fishermen community.

The fish houses (or “Unjam Ikan”) and fish traps (or “Bubu Ikan”) they built and the crab & lobster nets they sewed have been put to productive use by the fishermen after the monsoon season earlier this year to help improve their incomes. The oyster mushroom farms they built also helped complement the fishermen’s family income.

On his visit, Heinrich Jessen also took a motorboat, accompanied by SHF’s Teo, Farrah and Jebsen & Jessen’s Darren out to sea, about 10-20 km from shore to see how fish houses and fish traps were deployed in 2 locations by the fishermen.

They also visited one of the 3 oyster mushroom farms in a nearby village constructed under this community service initiative. The farm they visited can grow 1200 oyster mushrooms per harvesting cycle.

Heinrich Jessen noted that “It was most heartening to witness last year’s efforts from our partnership with Social Hero Foundation and the fishermen community in Mersing having come to fruition so meaningfully.”

SHF Trustee Datuk Seri Teo added that SHF was grateful to Heinrich Jessen and Jebsen & Jessen Group for their sponsorship of this meaningful initiative which will have a lasting impact on the well-being of the fishermen community in Mersing. Besides giving fishing tools, showing care and concern are equally important, especially for those living far away on the islands. Those living on the islands were not forgotten. He was also grateful that  Jessen made this personal trip to visit the fishermen and see how his Jebsen & Jessen’s “Meet-A-Need” initiative has truly made an impact on the local community in Mersing.
